  1. Actually "TOY" is not the correct breed name. The official breed name is American Australian Shepherd" and the common name is "Miniature Australian Shepherd".

The breed is DIRECTLY designed from the Standard Australian Shepherd. However, not an AKC recognized breed yet. The breed is more resistant to hip and eye problems, and has a longer life span.

I own the Miniature and the Standard and they are basically the same except for size.

  2. See a vet soon, please. I could be gum disease. I know you said no vet first or whatever, but many dogs and cats get this pretty easily. Not usually younger dogs, but they can still get it.
Have you tried brushing her teeth? Are her gums pink with black on them? Or naturally black?
Which is really irritating, because then you tell…

Intelligence: Australian Shepherds are eager to learn and please their owner. As a result, this is an easy to train breed, although they can be rather dominant. It is also a breed that must be trained, as it needs something to occupy its mind. Aussies were bred to work and without a purpose in life they become bored and can develop destructive behaviours.

General Character And Temperament: It is recommended that you socialize Aussies early, as they can be a bit shy with strangers. It is also good for them to get used to children, other dogs and pets at an early age if one wants relations to go smoothly. The herding instinct is very strong in this breed and they must be taught that not all children take kindly to being herded. It is probably best to keep Aussies in a well-fenced yard and on leads when out for a walk as they may otherwise feel compelled to herd traffic, which can be fatal. This is a one person or family dog so they do make good protectors. They are very vocal and have a peculiar bark-howl combination that can be utilised in their guarding capacity. This is not the best breed for novice dog owners.

  4. I dont know what the standard is for Aussies, but some of the dogs on that website dont look very small.

From what I see, they look like a legitimate rescue, so if they want to "specialize" in a type of dog, thats fine with me. At least those dogs wont be reproducing.

And as I see it, any dog that is adopted takes money out of the pockets of irresponsible breeders, so as far as I am concerned, they can call them whatever they want. :o )

  5. I searched on the Yellow pages for Australia but could not find any company registered with that name.

The closest name was Olympus Australia Pty Ltd which is a scientific firm.

The Yellow Pages is the most logical places to register a kennel because the elderly are unlikely
    to search online for kennels.

  6. It would be much easier to answer these questions split into different questions. Anyways here is a site devoted to double merles. The primary reason you do not breed double merles, you are breeding two dogs with recessive genes.

"Idiopathic epilepsy may be inherited in breeds, including Beagles, Keeshonden, Irish Setters, Belgian Tervurens, Siberian Huskies, Springer Spaniels, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds. A specific type of seizure known as temporal lobe epilepsy appears to be familial in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and is characterized by behavioral manifestations such as fly biting. The diagnosis of idiopathic epilepsy depends on eliminating other causes of seizures, structural brain abnormalities (such as hydrocephalus), encephalitis, or metabolic causes (such as hepatic encephalopathy)."

  7. Are you feeding her the version with salmon? It will give her fishy smelling breath. Check the ingredients.

  8. She looks like she could definitely be an Aussie mix. For fun you might take her to a herding instinct test and see how she does.

I have had several herding breeds, and they herd EVERYTHING. I have seen them herd a ground squirrel into its burrow, and then circle it to keep it in its "pen". They love to try to herd cats and people. They sometimes decide to add to their herd when we are hiking, and the poor person has little choice but to walk with us or be nagged the whole time. They love to herd other dogs at the dog park. And yes, they can be pretty weird.

  9. If the dog is truly a Miniature Australian Shepherd, you should be okay on weight. Since they just developing the breed in the I'm not sure if that is long enough to standardize the breed. always possible that you might get a throwback to a standard Australian Shepherd.

But really, as long as your dog annoying other tenants and a huge lab, is the management really going to come and weigh your dog to see whether or not you are a few pounds over?

  10. Actually there are toy and min. Australian Shepard. They show in ABRA shows (rare breed association) Not AKC but who knows in the future – they are cute a puppies and actually do look like mini aussies – but they are rather looking when they grow up and are not nearly as attractive.

Hard to say if it is being or not.

  11. Start giving her a cap ful of Apple Cider Vineger with her water daily. Make sure she is being given fresh water frequently, and keep brushing her teeth- coz she may not have plaque build up now- but you want to keep it that way!

    Good Luck!

  12. she looks like an aussie, but with something mixed into her. Maybe a lab or something. but there is almost aussie in her

  13. I know anything about the voting process, but I do know that there is no need to make an Aussie smaller. perfectly sized for their purpose and be downsized. no need for it. just silly. If I see a mini Labrador going to die.

ADD: Maybe invent mini sheep for them to herd or mini ducks for mini Labs to retrieve ;)
